My entry into the world of doping is related to the work of Prof. Schänzer. The first controls and knowledge come from his laboratory. It can be said that historically it is probably one of the pioneers in the discovery of prosecuted substances together with his Professor Manfred Donike, who succeeded him as head of the laboratory in Cologne. His research interests were always related to anabolic steroids, although he was equally successful in analyzing other substances, primarily erythropoietin, prohormones and designer drugs. However, its success with steroids is also significant due to the discovery of long term metabolites, due to which more than hundred doping athletes from the Beijing and London Olympic Games were discovered subsequently last year. One of the reasons for his success in anabolic steroid analysis is probably because he perceives them as living things that evolve and change, which need to be understand in order to be discovered.

Fourteen years after we met for the first time, we saw at the USADA meeting again. Willy, popularly called in the world of antidoping world, received a prestigious Larry Bowers Science Contribution Award, and people again had the opportunity to hear and greet one of the greatest researchers in sports. I was pleased that I had the opportunity to attend the event. I saw a man whom I respect so much. Many said he had grown old, but in front of me was the same professor whom I met first time. He had the same brilliant eyes that looked for the challenge and face of the great expert.

Moj ulazak u svet dopinga vezan je za rad Prof. Šancera. Prve kontrole i saznanja potiču iz njegove laboratorije. Može se reći da je istorijski gledano verovatno jedan od pionira u otkrivanju zabranjenih supstanci zajedno sa svojim Profesorom Manfredom Donikeom, koga je nasledio na mestu direktora laboratorije u Kelnu. Njegovi istraživački interesi su uvek bili vezani za steroide, mada je bio podjednako uspešan u analizi ostalih supstanci, pre svega eritropoetina, prohormona i dizajnerskih suplemenata. Međutim, njegov uspeh sa steroidima je značajan i zbog otkrivanja dugotrajnih metabolita, zbog kojih tokom prošle godine naknadno otkriveno više od 100 dopingovanih sportista sa olimpijskih igara u Pekingu i Londonu. Jedan od razloga njegovog uspeha u analizi steroida je verovatno i zbog toga jer ih doživljava kao žive stvari koje se razvijaju, menjaju i koje treba upoznati da bi ste ih otkrili.

Četrnaest godina nakon što smo se prvi put sreli, videli smo se ponovo sastanku USADA. Vili kako ga popularno zovu u svetu antidopinga je dobio prestižnu nagradu za doprinos u nauci Lari Bauers, a ljudi su imali ponovo priliku da čuju i pozdrave jednog od najvećih istraživača u sportu. Bio sam zadovoljan što sam imao priliku da prisustvujem događaju. Video sam čoveka koga toliko poštujem. Mnogi su rekli da je ostario, ali ispred mene je bio isti onaj  profesor koga sam prvi put upoznao pre 14 godina. Imao je iste one sjajne oči koje traže izazov i lice velikog znalca.
